In 1848, folk portrait painter Ammi Phillips returns to his hometown after a personal loss. His encounters with a family of seven cousins bring private grief into contact with a changing world, where younger generations are questioning the futures expected of them. Tammy Ryan's play explores family, self-determination, and the role of the artist, setting the act of making a portrait against the social conflicts of nineteenth-century America.
