With Vienna's Duke apparently absent, his deputy Angelo enforces the city's neglected laws and condemns Claudio to death. When Claudio's sister Isabella pleads for mercy, Angelo makes a demand that exposes the gulf between his public morality and private desires. As the disguised Duke watches events unfold, Shakespeare's Measure for Measure places authority, sexual coercion, justice, and forgiveness in uncomfortable relation to one another.
